StockBoss Interactive Applications

Which version of StockBoss should I use?

If your BlackBerry does not meet either of the above conditions, you must use StockBoss 2.1.

StockBoss 2.1 Communications Types

By default StockBoss 2.0 uses the integrated Email capability of the BlackBerry device to send and receive quote and portfolio update requests. Some users may elect to change this default to one of the options below. The principle advantage of using an alternative is bypassing your corporate email systems by communicating directly with the StockBoss server. Before making a change to the Communcations Type please read the requirements for each option carefully.

Can I use Enterprise + Mobile Data Service?

To check if your BlackBerry is supported by a BlackBerry Enterprise Server with Mobile Data Service open the Options program on the device and select the Service Book menu item. If you find an entry labelled "Internet [IPPP]" then you do have Mobile Data Service. If you do not have this service book entry, do not select Enterprise + Mobile Data Service. You may check below to see if your carrier has a WAP Gateway, or simply leave the communications type on Email.

Can I use Nextel TCP/IP Gateway?

If you have a 6510, 7510 or 7520 BlackBerry from Nextel then you may use the Nextel TCP/IP Gateway to communication with the StockBoss system. However, you may also have an BlackBerry Enterprise Server with Mobile Data Service. See the instructions just above to determine if you have Mobile Data Service. If you do, then you may select Enterprise + Mobile Data Service. If you do not, then you may select Nextel TCP/IP Gateway, or simply leave the communications type on Email.

Can I use WAP Gateway?

Use of StockBoss through some carriers' WAP gateways is possible. Check the list below before proceeding. Use the following steps to configure StockBoss 2.1:

1. At the StockBoss Set Communication Type screen select Carrier WAP Gateway as the connection method. Click the wheel and select 'Save'.
2. Look for your carrier below and enter the parameters for the 3 lines on the next screen (if APN is blank below, only enter the IP and Port values):

T-Mobile

Trouble Shooting

I got an error "The application ... has attempted to open a connection to a location inside the firewall and outside the firewall which is not allowed by your IT policy."

To restore StockBoss functionality, select the Set Communications Type menu and change the connection to Email.

Unfortunately, the default BlackBerry security policy is to expressly forbid so-called "split pipe connections" (for details, refer to the following RIM document: Application Security for Java-based BlackBerry Handhelds). Third-party applications are permanently restricted to the first connection mode attempted (e.g. BES/MDS or WAP), regardless if the attempt was successful or not. Unfortunately, the only workaround is to reinstall the OS before trying a different connection mode. (For example, if you wish to connect over WAP, be careful not to attempt a BES/MDS connection first!) Below, find step-by-step instructions on how to reinstall the OS.

Reinstalling the handheld code is a relatively drastic operation, so for safety's sake, back up your data first.

1. Back up your data as desired

2. Use the Add/Remove Programs control panel to Uninstall the handheld code from your desktop machine

3. Use the Add/Remove Programs control panel to Uninstall the Desktop Manager from your desktop machine

4. Reinstall the Desktop Manager on your desktop machine

5. Reinstall the handheld code on your desktop machine

6. Run the Desktop Manager's Application Loader wizard:

6a. If Stock Alert and Portfolio Tracking is listed as an Optional Application, click on that line to highlight it and then click on the Delete button. Leave any other programs you use checked.

6b. At the final screen of the wizard, entitled "Completing the Application Loader Wizard", press the "Advanced..." button located near the lower right

6c. Check "Erase all currently installed applications" and select Next to continue

6d. You may leave the automatic data backup option as default if you wish; select Next to continue

6e. Review the change list and press Finish to initiate the OS reinstall

7. Reinstall the StockBoss application from scratch

8. Use the instruction above on this page to set the WAP connection details.

I'm getting my alerts or quote request messages in the RIM inbox, but not in the View Messages screen and/or I'm unable to open the Attachment Viewer.

By default StockBoss uses attachments to hide the binary data encoding much of the information in the messages. Your mail server is stripping the attachments out of the messages before delivering them to your device. Go to the Set {A}lert Prefs screen, set Use Attachments to ‘No’ and select Send from the pop-up menu.

When I request a portfolio update my RIM device becomes sluggish.

The very first time your request or receive a portfolio update message the device is allocating storage for the charts. This may take 1-2 minutes. Thereafter further requests will be processed promptly.
